Know Your Privilege

pityplease:

There are many kinds of privileges in this world. They are granted at birth and are rarely usurped. They are based on the benefits of the majority or dominant class and I think it’s best you understand them now.

The first is privy based on sexuality. Because most people fall into the heterosexual clause, being Straight is considered a privilege. No one will persecute you based on your majority status. You are “normal”. It is not offensive to be normal.

The second privy is based on sex and to a similar extent, gender. Whether you were born into it or identify based on gender being Male is also a privilege. Since the dawn of man we have been tricked into thinking that MALE/MAN is the most important and superior sex/gender. In contemporary society they earn the most, enjoy the most, and receive the most.

The third privy is based on race. In all aspects, being White has been the most envied. It IS a position of dominance. Throughout history “Whiteness” has been shown as superior— even more human— when compared to other races. Although not the majority, White privilege allows you to deem others as “minorities”.

And lastly there is cissexism (Cis-gender privilege), ableism (Able-Bodied privilege), and classism (Class Privilege) which I will go into below.

Now, almost everyone has at least one these privileges and a variable amount of passing privilege depending on ethnicity, gender identity, and sexuality. And after that, people have tenuous privileges based on the morals and ideologies set in place by those in the dominant or majority aspects. But obviously some don’t. It goes without saying, but due to this structure the Able-Bodied White Straight Male is considered the tippy top in this world/most visible group whereas A Disabled Non-White Queer-Identified, Genderqueer or Trans*woman are at the very bottom/basically non-existent to society.

Still mad

It’s exactly that type of thought process that leads to the kind of violence you are blaming on everything but the correct source.

I am not the thought police, feel free to think what you like, but I will address it if and when it comes up, and I will not support it, I will not.

I’m a mother. My kids are half black.

Yes, I worry about this kind of shit, and about the shit they will have to deal with on a daily basis as they grow up.

“I’m not racist” posts racist things, so I will share them here for others to see

All of the below, posted by someone I know (not friends with, but forced association, which I am now officially going to end on my part) on their facebook status:

I will post my only direct responses to his posts.  I am beyond infuriated.

·                                 I’m so sick of hearing about all this Trayvon shit. Don’t get me wrong what happened is very tragic and unfortunate regardless of race. The dude that shot him is an idiot and acted without thinking, that much I agree with. What I’m sick of is hearing all you crybabies whining about what the kid was wearing and how unfair it is that he was stereo typed for it. People are too blind to see the big picture and the real problem here. (This is gonna be kind of a long rant and it’s not gonna all fit here so let me finish and make my point before you bombard me with you’re uninformed comments)

The major underlying problem here is the glorification of criminal behavior in the African American community. It’s unfortunate that African American youth would rather idolize the drug dealers and violent criminals in their communities ins…tead of the entrapeneurs and business owners and other positive role models that are trying to better themselves and the community. Somehow they’ve been brainwashed into thinking that having “street cred” is more important than being a productive, positive part of society. (I’m still not done. Hold your thoughts).

Things are never going to get better until enough people in the black community stand up and decide they want to break this cycle and give these kids positive role models to look up to.

[Name removed], I’m not defending the guy that shot him in any way. I agree with you 100% he was a psychopath. I’m addressing the the people that are lashing out at the “white devil” like we pulled the trigger as a collective whole. Sorry, black pe…ople but this kids blood is on your hands too. And as far as a grown man being afraid of a 17 year old black kid, How many people do you think have been robbed or murdered by 17 black kids? Yes, I’ve seen the pictures the media wants everyone to see with him in his football uniform and smiling, have you seen some of his other pictures online where he’s not looking quite so cute and innocent?

You can twist my words around all you want to make me sound racist (I’m not, and I’m sure there are plenty of people on here that will vouch for me on that, I’ve gone to war side by side with black dudes, hispanic dudes, asian dudes, and some dudes that I don’t even know where the fuck they’re from, and those guys are gonna be like brothers to me to the day I die.)

Uh oh, [NAME REMOVED], it looks like your White Privilidge is showing… I’ll make sure that my son is wearing what you deem to be appropriate attire the next time we go visit. … If we go visit

No one is twisting anything. Just reading what you type and processing what you say/have said, and forming their own opinions based on what is provided. Simple as that.

This is all I managed to copy before he told me to go fuck myself and removed me.

Oh and don’t tell me that ‘other races beside white target POC too’

i-hear-other-words-behind:

Why do you think such incidences occur?

Shadism, prejudice, classism, poverty.

Where does it stem from?

Whiteness. Segregation. A few advantages being given to certain groups based on skin color. Institutionalized marginalization.

Where does it stem from?

White ideology.

What does it create?

A society in which marginalized groups (POC) struggle in order to reach that standards set by white-ideologists which sets them against each other.

So shut the fuck up about how whiteness doesn’t play a role in rearing privileged white people, or how whiteness contributes to the attacks of POC by whites AND BY POC, or how whiteness is separate from how marginalized groups act.

Shut the fuck up you don’t know shit.
